Cellulite is often cited as one of the most challenging aesthetic concerns women have. But what is it and why do so many women have it?
The word cellulite describes an area of dimpled, bumpy, or lumpy skin over layers of fat. You get cellulite when your body fat pushes through the network of collagen fibers, called fibrous bands, that support your skin.
Women get cellulite at far higher rates than men (90% vs 10%), and this condition doesn’t discriminate based on body type, size, or age. Researchers believe there are three factors why women get cellulite more often than men:
Women store fat closer to the surface of the skin. This makes it easier to see fat beneath the surface of the skin, which means it’s easier to see cellulite, too.
